Yes, in Fact it Can get Worse

Wow what a day. Driving home, I thought about blogging about my annoyance at the new Hilton hires (my office is connected to a hotel, and i walk through the lobby at least 2-3 times a day to get to other office buildings or say, lunch). Rather than the long post I was going to make about the lack of common courtesy today, and people aren't raised right anymore because I got a door slammed in my face by yes, a Hilton service provider. You could tell he has never held a door open in his life. He walked with what you would call swagger and attitude. He won't last a week there.

But I am over that (it was going to be a good post about the lack of common decency in how certain people are raised today and me-first society). People aren't taught manners. But then on the drive home when I am actually at peace and only going 60-65 in the right lane, I look in my rear view and there was this 18wheeler zooming in. Remember the truck chase in Terminator 3 (or 2). it looked like that.

So I was just happy to get home. Safe. To the mail I go....

IRS letter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH! My accountant did my 2006 taxes wrong and under reported my income by basically all my mutual fund interest and dividends investments, which adds up.

Yes, a day can get worse. Be careful for what you wish for (like saying, can it get any worse?). Needless to say I am chewing out the accountant tomorrow and don't plan on ever using him again and wonder how I can officially report his incompetency. He didn't report a colleague's sale of a house during his move so his letter from the IRS had a number that looked like $437,000 under reported. Mine wasn't as bad but it was four figures bad.

I better stop now. Is it slander to call out a guy's business by name and scream never go there? Is that illegal? Can't wait for the conversation I am going to have with him tomorrow.

OK, I think I am leaving this post now mostly composed. I will have a nice conversation with the IRS tomorrow and make nice, with only a $85 penalty and no interest. I'm not even going to bother with the accountant to try to get that back, since I paid him $295 to do such a screw up job. If he doesn't offer me any refund, however, I will go to the BBB.

Music I am Listening to

I have diverse taste. Just to prove it, I am posting Wolf Parade "Language City" which I love. They are what you would call "indy" music. I love it when the song changes beats and everything.

And then, since I am a sucker for pop, Miley Cyrus "See you Again". Makes your head bob, your feet tap, and I imagine this rocks in a few clubs. Wouldn't know, haven't been to any in awhile....

Language City - Wolf Parade

See You Again - Miley Cyrus

Yes, I realize this is a year old song. I'm good with the what's new music except for when it comes to main stream pop. Because I don't listen to top 40 radio.

Saturday Post

Wall-E is getting the best reviews of the year. Here is a funny analysis of the one bad review.

This is an interesting story about a cat with no face. Creepy at first but cute once you get into it.

Ground Zero

This moment (9/11/01) in my life hit me hard. It hit me like the last ten years of my life at that moment had been a waste of time, a failure. It hit me because they did it and it actually worked. It just hit me and has strongly affected the last 7 years of my life in a not so positive manner. This really hit me and I finally got to stand there and look at the hole. That was enough. I didn't seek out the viewing platform that exists. It is just a hole but it represents so much more. It's just a construction site, but it means so much more to me that you will never really understand, because I personally don't understand why either.

New York, New York part 1

Inside Grand Central Station. Pretty Big. Pretty Cool. Can't figure out the captions, so the rest is Grand Central at Night, The New York Stock Exchange (it really felt like a movie set, because there was no light because the street was so small), More of Wall Street, and the view of the Empire State Building from my hotel room.

New York, New York

Times Square has changed a lot since I saw it 25 years ago.

Housing crisis: Other shoe dropping and what led to this BS to start with

Two good stories:

You could get a 800,000 dollar house with a gas an macy's card.

Start to finish: How this crisis happened (courtesy 3 part series from Washington Post, very good, thanks for TBL for finding it.)

Boom
Bust
Aftermath

Did you know that if you worked for McDonalds and made $35,000 a year, you could qualify for a $500,000 home as a sub-prime?

I think the lenders are criminals, and I think the borrower's are stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Thanks for f'in up the economy. Why would you sign those papers? dumb asses....

Don't buy shit you can't afford. And quit crying on my CNN everyday about losing your house. boo hoo. You make $600 a month and think you can buy a $250,000 dollar house? arrghhh.

Seriously, if I made that much and sat in front of a guy that said, we don't need to report your income, you just need to sign here....well, stupid you.

I am out of words.

Obama and McCain Economic Nonsense

Another article repeating what I have previously said: leave the oil companies alone, you are ruining capitalism.

Old Man yelling

Look at these beautiful shots of the clouds forming behind my house: it looks like an old man. Wish for once I had a better camera. See the mouth? See the eyebrows? See the chin? See the teeth? there are teeth...

This cloud will dump much needed rain here, imminently. Hope it doesn't knock out my satellite since I am watching the top chef finale...A show I have never seen!

Wednesday Night Post:; More Rant about Continental Shelf Drilling; Oil drilling in US

The Offispring new release came out this week. Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace. guess that covers the emotions? This link has the first single, Hammerhead, and a best of mp3 link for one song per album for the history of Offspring. I love offspring...

I have been indifferent towards Coldplay, but I find their new album catching. The itunes song is cool, and when Lost! becomes a single you will clap along. Here it is and links to purchase"

Lost! - Coldplay

Today was the debate on the hill about opening up drilling on the continental shelf...what I alluded to in the last post. The democrats, are of course against it, saying that the oil companies already have the right to drill on 68 million acres of federal leases, and they haven't done so. Um, don't you think they would have if there was oil to be found and it was profitable to drill? Ironic for the same politicians threatening a windfall tax then demanding that the oil companies drill where it isn't technologically possible or profitable. They would drill if it were not profitable, but only if you keep those tax breaks coming. See the oxymoron, folks?

You know who is drilling off the coast of Cuba, within eyesight of Florida? Wait for it..China! This is a perfect example of "I drink your milkshake!" You don't think China is performing horizontal drilling towards our coast? Do you think there might be oil on the north side of that line, that our own laws prohibit us from drilling? In the words of GOB, come on!

When are you going to approve a new refinery being built? It is claimed northern Alaska (ANWR) has more oil BBL than current Saudi reserves.....

Definition of Conservative, from Lyn Nofziger

courtesy of my Dad:

“I would define a conservative, first as one who believes in the Constitution as it is written. That takes care of free speech, freedom of religion, the right to petition the government, the right to keep and bear arms and, in the words of William O. Douglas in one of his saner moments, ‘the right to be let alone. Second, a conservative believes in small, limited government at every level. Along with this he believes strongly in individual responsibility. That is, a person or a family should take care of itself and turn for help to government only when all other means have been exhausted. It also means that society, before government, has a duty to take care of its own. Government should be a resource of last resort. Third, a conservative believes taxes should be levied for the purpose of financing the limited responsibilities of government such as providing for the common defense, catching and incarcerating criminals, minting money and filling potholes. Taxes should not be levied for the purpose of redistributing wealth... One other thing I think a conservative believes is that the parents, not government, are and should be responsible for the upbringing and behavior of their children.” —Lyn Nofziger

Courtesy of me:
/rant

Notice there is no mention of religion (other than freedom of), sanctity of marriage, abortion, etc and all those other things that current people try to chime in when talking from a Republican point of view. Just live your life, and I will live mine. I really like the statement of redistribution of wealth...Which exactly what they (ok, democrats) are chiming about when an oil company actually profits on 10% of their investment. Wouldn't you be pissed if the government decided to windfall tax you because you made 10% of your investments? You invest 100 dollars, you make 10. Oil companies invest 100 billion dollars, and profit 10 billion. That's not windfall folks, that is conservative and smart investment.

Go after anyone who makes over 20% if you want, then you will get Google, Microsoft, most banks and all the pharmaceutical companies. Start complaining about the price of your medicine, and get over the price of gas.

But since we all own mutual funds in those companies as well, I would still be pissed if the government decided to tax a windfall on any company that profits over 20%. That is the whole point of capitalism, right? I'm just trying to make a point. The people who bitch about the oil companies are uneducated or poor or ignorant, and the politicians are just placating them because they know the facts. Because they do know the facts and just want your votes. Like when they hike to the Mobil station on top of the hill by the Watergate, and then drive away in their SUVs. Change your lifestyle habits, cause there ain't a change o' coming about the price of gas.

Tomorrow, I will continue my rant about the absurdity of ethanol and how that is costing us more money and escalating the price of food (ie, "commodities").

Monday Post: Left lane is for passing, Firefox 3, Weeds premieres

This article is about how going 65 on the highway will save you gas. Which is true, but in Houston driving, will also get your ass honked at, jeered at, tailgating and maybe worse.

My side note is: When will someone launch a campaign in Spanish that teaches the left lane is for passing only? Going 65 in the left lane deserves all of the above. People are just not taught like I was pass on the left, ride to the right. Every morning, I get behind someone going 60 or 65, and they scoff at you if you motion for them to get over. They are actually causing unsafe driving because everyone else going 70-80 have to swerve around them and changing lanes is more dangerous. Stupid people. Man, I have wanted to rant about that for weeks now. Stupid people, and I am not stereotyping because I would say over 75% (in my scientific survey of driving to work every day for the last 3 years) are minorities and mostly hispanic. So there you are. Left lane is for passing, fools. coast in the right. (BTW: that is a law. left lane is for passing. I wish cops would pull these oafs over)

To better news, Firefox 3 gets released tomorrow.

Anyone watching Weeds tonight? They are moving out of the suburbs.....

Co-workers annoying habits....what do you do?

When mom and dad decide they are really, really, equal partners in house and childcare. Some crazy stats about how much women still do in household chores, even the working ones.

And finally, an article on what straight couples can learn from gay couples, since gender isn't an issue when it comes to taking out the trash.

Soccer Soccer

It's a good week with Euro2008 on twice a day. My boss is Dutch so Holland winning 4-0 was a big deal. That may not be the right score but he was in a good mood today. My group we each got a $250 gift card (no relation to the game, but the timing was right!) today for our work on the conference last month, which made my day. Time to buy bar stools and get those curtains I have been delaying for 6 months!

Soccer tonight, we lost. We played ok but really should have won. Not too tight on the defense. But now it is almost midnight and I can't sleep....

We had our required conducts of business meeting today, which includes going over our policies such as harassment, conflicts of interest and ethics. Pretty intense stuff. To celebrate, here is your lolcats of the day:

Washington Post: The New Generation

I don't know if I love them or hate them, but they sure feel entitled.

The Chosen ones? More qualified than previous generations? All I know is that the kids graduating today are the ones who all got trophies because there are no winners or losers. And there were no F's or red ink on paper.

They didn't dig dirt at the construction site and they didn't scoop shit at the vet clinic. They tool around Africa and the rest of the world and then come back here and think they are entitled to the best jobs in the universe.

They may be better educated but they still talk in OMG and LOL speak. Good luck to them, and I mean it. When I graduated in 91 it was the (then) worse job market ever. I seem to make it without fighting AIDS in Africa before I was 17.

Saturday Music: Atmosphere "You"

Do you know how hard it is to find a song called "You" when you don't remember the artist? Don you know how many songs start with "You"? Well I found it thanks to itunes. And here it is for you:

Letter to the Senate re: S. 3044

I am writing to urge you to oppose Senator Reid's punitive and
discriminatory energy bill that would harm our Nation's energy industry
and economy.

Specifically, when the Senate considers energy legislation, with cloture
votes now scheduled as early as Tuesday, June 10, I urge you to OPPOSE S.
3044, "The Consumer-First Energy Act of 2008." The bill does NOTHING to
increase energy supplies. Contrary to its title, this legislation would
prove very harmful to American businesses and consumers that rely on
energy as a foundation for our economy's strength and our modern living
standards. It is based on a completely disproved assumption: that the
answer to the energy policy challenges facing America is massive new
taxes. According to a 1990 Report of the Congressional Research Service,
the windfall profit tax of the 1980's reduced domestic oil production as
much as 6%, and increased imports as much as 16%. Critically, this bill
risks undermining the vital, long-term investments in additional supplies
of energy that are needed to sustain our growing population and economy.

In order to compete in global energy markets for energy supplies that our
growing economy requires, we need stable tax and regulatory policies that
encourage energy investments and that do not place American companies at a
competitive disadvantage. While the oil and gas industry's current
profitability is strong, what seems never to be reported are the record,
multi-billion dollar tax payments currently being made by energy companies
to federal, state and local governments.

As noted, the bill completely fails to address the primary cause of our
Nation's current energy challenges: insufficient growth in energy
supplies to meet the needs of a growing American and global economy.

In conclusion, I urge you to VOTE AGAINST S. 3044, "The Consumer-First
Energy Act of 2008."

It's only every four years, kinda like the World Cup but only for Europe. When it was on in 04 I actually paid for it on PPV. not anymore! Soccer in HD rocks.

Friday round up: Oil sucks, Clint Rocks, We are in a Recession get used to it

I'm back to linking good stories I read today. I guess I read a lot of good stories.

Here is Clint Eastwood telling Spike Lee that "he needs to just shut his face".

The market took a tank today, thanks to oil prices and unemployment. People are finally realizing what the problem with oil is, speculators. It still only costs maybe $50 bucks to pull a barrel of oil out of the ground. The speculators and bad dollar is causing the problem. Here's a good article about the fallacy of $150/barrel oil being here for good.

I'm watching Family Guy from the start. Seems funny so far.

Are you watching the Belmont tomorrow? Go Big Brown?

Austin City Limits Music Festival schedule is out!

It got released today. I'm not so excited about this year as last year, but last year was my first so I am over it. I already decided I like Sunday the best (we were going Saturday) so instead we will get Sunday tickets and head back to Houston on Monday. Here is the link to Sunday, and you can get to the rest of the lineup from there.

Will miss Vampire Weekend and MGMT, they are my favorite new bands of the year but there will be other opportunities.

definitely see (jumping between stages): Okervil River, Recontours, Foo Fighters, Against Me!, Silverspun Pickups, Band of Horses, some Gnarls Barkley, and anyone else I can squeeze in between breaks. Hope the weather is good, it was great last year!

I remember last year running from Arcade Fire to catch some Muse, I am glad I got to see both, before hopping into the cab line!

Tuesday post

Got our asses kicked in soccer tonight. We were just dominated. Not embarrassing dominated but bad enough. I think it was 11-4. We only scored because we get an extra player when we are down by 7 points. Kind of like the pity rule in softball.

No AI. no new TV. guess I'll read a book? What to do after vacation and fun? I get to go to Europe and Asia later this year for work so I am excited about that. Will get my airline points for sure!

At least the primaries are over. Will be interesting when the real scuttlebutt gets thrown about. Let the games begin.

Not much else, goodnight.

Monday Night Post

First day back at work, and I got hit with a random alcohol and drug test. Yay me. I was like, what do you think I was doing on vacation? Seriously, it was random in that everyone on my floor got hit.

So I go, and blow in the breathalyser. Which honestly is called the Intoxicator. That was the brand name. Shouldn't it be called the Soberator? I mean, they want people to pass, right? Doesn't Intoxicator imply they want people to fail? Do the cops want you to fail or just hope you are a bad driver who weaves in and out of lanes? Anyway, I like my name better because it confirms you are sober, as opposed to intoxicated. At 3 in the afternoon at work.

Another embarrassing moment at work. There was this shrieking high shrill sound in the hall this afternoon, and I asked my two office mates (we all have separate offices but walls are thin) what the hell is that noise? Should we call someone?

Oops, it was my boss. He has one of those contraptions that monitors his irregular heartbeats and he sends it in via phone (think about the old fashion modem sound). I was so embarrassed when he stuck his head out and said that was him. Sorry. (but next time, shut the door dude. A dog would have howled at that sound.) To the haters: I'm not making fun of irregular heartbeats. I have one. Just the sound.

Back from vacation in Los Angeles

Man, do I have a lot to talk about. But for now I will just post my favorite pics from my favorite part of LA: Sunset Blvd.

I will rant later on my pet peave: bastards who get between you and the baggage carousel, we are standing 3 feet away for a reason? And they fill the gap? And then put their freaking child in a stroller which I will guarantee will get hit by my bag when I pick it up...

like i said, later. enjoy the pics...
